Important Dates:
Discover the spirit of Uruguay on a journey through coastal towns, bohemian villages, and sunlit beaches — from gaucho traditions to the artistic charm of Pueblo Garzón and the relaxed elegance of Punta del Este. Along the way, enjoy bold wines, connect with Uruguay’s Jewish community, meet local creatives, and embrace the easy-going Latin rhythm of life.
We’ll explore Uruguay’s Jewish roots, which, though dating back to the Conversos of the 1500s, truly took shape in the late 19th century. Some immigrants en route to Argentina or Brazil stayed, with a few adopting the gaucho lifestyle and blending Jewish and local cowboy culture. Today, the 18,000-strong community, under the Israelite Central Committee, includes Sephardim and Ashkenazim, with Orthodox, Chabad, and Conservative congregations. Montevideo offers a Jewish museum, Holocaust memorial, and a statue of Golda Meir, while Punta del Este draws Jewish families each summer with synagogues and kosher dining easy to find. The Jewish community is well-integrated into civil society and is deeply involved in its economic and social development. Uruguay has long held positive bonds with Israel, maintains full diplomatic relations, and is a frequent defender of Israel at the UN.
